Understanding the damage smoking does to the lungs
There is a saying, 'I'm older than my teeth and the same age as my tongue'. But if you are a smoker aged 45, your lungs could be as much as 135 years old. This is what many people discovered when they attended a World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Open House at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. Health screens are vital to early detection
...It's estimated that one in five school- aged children suffer from asthma. But thanks to a partnership between the Department of Health and the charity, Open Airways, an Island-wide asthma education program has helped to ensure that admissions to hospital have decreased by a staggering 77 percent. Managing asthma is key, says visiting specialist
Last week Body & Soul profiled 14-year-old Rachel Doughty who has asthma and talked about how it restricts her ability to participate in sports. Rachel has never had an asthma attack or had to go to the hospital for difficulty breathing. But many asthmatics say they forgo exercise because it will trigger an attack. Visiting asthma specialist Professor Martyn Partridge responded to this in his public talk last week. He said in Bermuda such an attack would indicate that the person was not managing their asthma well. Date: May 12, 2009 | Body & Soul | Royal Gazette

Grab hold of the latest asthma information
It is estimated that more than 7,000 people on the Island have asthma. The support group, Open Airways, works hard at educating the public on how to manage the disease. It provides free pillows to asthmatic children, as well as free spacers for all asthmatics and has piloted an asthma nurse for schools. King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) asthma educator Debbie Barboza said that such efforts have had a positive impact on the community. The number of asthma patients admitted to KEMH for problems with the disease has dropped significantly since the formation of Open Airways. Ms Barboza heads the Asthma Education Centre at KEMH. It handles about 300 patient visits each year. Nurse Barboza provides clients with information on recognising and understanding warning signals, asthma triggers and suggests how to avoid them. " Liz came to my home, put stuffed animals in the fridge, had me take up the carpet and even suggested to my doctor to put my son on Singulair," she said. "My son was six years old then.
